Three Six Mafia

Three Six Mafia - May 21st 2006 - Vibe Magazine - Memphis, Tennessee

I was hired by VIBE Magazine to shoot 3-6 for their annual Juice Issue. At the time this was quite a big deal. 3-6 had just won their Oscar for Best Original Song “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp”. The plan (LOL) was to shut down Beale Street and shoot the 3 members walking down the Street with Oscar’s in hand. So much for a plan: we did indeed shut down a few blocks of Beale Street but I noticed DJ Paul & Juicy J walking up to me without the third member Crunchy Black. I introduced myself and asked when Crunchy was gonna show up, Juicy J replied “No Crunchy Black”, I asked again to get the same response. 3-6’s manager was there and it was news to him as well. Apparently Crunchy was outed from the group without anyone knowing. I proceeded as planned and it quickly became obvious “The Plan” was not working. Juicy J could barley stand up, he told me he had been drinking all night celebrating and had the worst hangover. At that moment my inexperience really came out, I was freaking out saying to myself “This is your first shot at a big shoot and your blowing it” I suggested we go into the BBQ restaurant next us to grab some food and regroup and 3-6 loved that idea. Once inside I positioned them at the table you see in the shot. I had had the Oscar for a good 30 mins at this point because they didn’t have the energy to hold it. I positioned the Oscar on the table and proceeded to shoot them eating for approx. 30 mins. Still saying to myself I’m blowing it and VIBE will hate this because it’s not the plan. I think it’s safe to say “Fuck Plans”. This became and still to this day my most well known photo shoot. You just never know when you might have a classic shoot in front of you till it passes.
