Tyler The Creator - March 18th 2011 i-D Magazine - Austin, Texas

This is one my favorite shoots of all time. Tyler the Creator / Odd Future were known at the time but still very underground. That all changed this day when they performed at the Thrasher Skate party. That one show made Tyler the talk of the whole festival and the rest was history. This photo was shot out in the middle of the street in front of their AirBnb. This was a media day which means i was competing with approx. 10 other photographers for a time slot. I decided not to shoot in the house but to go outside. Tyler was a bit apprehensive asking me why am i shooting him on a stool in the middle of the street? I told him to give me one shot and he would see that my lighting technique that day would make it look different than what the naked eye see’s. I shot one photo and showed Tyler and he flipped out! I went on to shoot only 70 photos within a 5 to 10 min period, there was no need for more as Tyler just gave me different looks with every pop of the flash, a true dream subject! After the session Tyler’s manager Christian Clancy invited me to shoot the now infamous Thrasher party.
